Injured Chris Gayle Could Miss Rest of One-Day International (ODI) Series #News

KOCHI, India (CMC) – West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle could be out of action for up to four weeks, after suffering a hamstring pull during the first One-Day International (ODI) against India in Kochi, on Thursday. Gayle is likely to miss the remaining two ODIs and the start of the New Zealand tour immediately after the series. He suffered the injury when he was run-out for zero off the second ball of the innings. Gayle failed to beat the direct hit from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and tumbled awkwardly, landing on his knee. He was in pain and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. Gayle was initially treated at the ground by the orthopaedic surgeon Dr Bipin Theruvil, before he was admitted to hospital. An MRI scan found that there was a “hamstring tear on his left leg and small blood clot around”. “The injuries will take at least two to four weeks to heal,” Dr Theruvil told reporters. The West Indies Test series in New Zealand begins on December 3 in Dunedin.

CONGRATULATIONS To 2013 CONCACAF Women’s Championship WINNERS U-17 Reggae Girlz

A moment of magic by Felicia Davidson gave Jamaica a 1-1 draw with Mexico in the 2013 CONCACAF Women’s Championship on Sunday, sealing a first-place Group A finish for the tournament host. The 16-year-old, United States-based midfielder netted directly from a right-sided corner kick in the first minute of first-half stoppage time. Despite both teams having already locked up semifinal berths, the game enjoyed all the atmosphere of a cup final. After all, there was still plenty for which to play. Mexico needed a win to claim the group’s top spot, while the tournament hosted only had to avoid a loss. The Mexicans jumped out to a ninth-minute lead, when Betzy Cuevas struck a half-cross, half-shot from the right wing that floated over goalkeeper Shanay Ricketts and into the net. MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – A moment of magic by Felicia Davidson gave Jamaica a 1-1 draw with Mexico in the 2013 CONCACAF Women’s Championship on Sunday, sealing a first-place Group A finish for the tournament host. Though the unexpected development may have silenced the large crowd at Catherine Hall Stadium for a short while, the game continued to be played at a passionate pace. Briana Woodall nearly doubled the Tricolor’s lead in the 39th minute, but Ricketts was able to make a leaping save off the effort that originated from 30-yards out. Five minutes after the break, Jamaica’s Jessica Johnson took a pass down the right wing and sprinted towards the endline. She ripped a cross that almost found the net, forcing goalkeeper Emily Alvarado to palm the ball out for a corner. Mexico staged a furious offensive assault in the final ten minutes in a bid to win the group title. In the 82nd minute, Janae Gonzalez one-timed an effort from just outside the 18-yard box that Ricketts gathered in easily. Two minutes later, Woodall hit the left post from 20-yards out. Woodall came close again, lashing a right-footed shot from the edge of the 18-yard box that Ricketts somehow diverted with her right hand. With stoppage time running out, Jamaica had one last chance to secure the three points. Khadija Shaw soared to head Davidson’s right-sided corner kick towards the Mexican goal. Alvarado, though, was positioned perfectly and only had to jump slightly to bring the ball down with two hands. Jamaica and Mexico’s semifinal opponents will be determined after Tuesday’s top-of-the-table Group B clash between Canada and the United States. NOTES: After two losses against Mexico in previous CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship outings, Jamaica got its first point against the regional power…Jamaica is unbeaten in six of its last seven outings in the competition.

Three-time title holders Brazil kick off their Group A campaign against the Slovaks, while hosts UAE will be treated to a rapturous reception when they take on Honduras in the group’s other game. The Baby Elephants had their best ever finish at a U-17 World Cup when they made their debut appearance at Canada 1987, beating Italy 2-1 in extra time to claim third place. Italy had to wait 18 years to take their revenge at Peru 2005, defeating the west Africans 4-3 in a goal-fest of an opening match. Their opponents Honduras are out for a historic first win at the tournament, vital if they are to progress further. Ras Al Khaimah plays host to the day’s other Group B game, as New Zealand look for revenge against the side that beat them 5-0 at the 1999 edition of the tournament. Uruguay coach Fabian Coito will be keen to claim three points before his side come up against the stiffer competition of Côte d’Ivoire and Italy. Player to watch Gabriel (Brazil) Signing a professional contract with domestic powerhouse Santos this September, Gabriel is the standout player in a strong attacking line-up. Though the 1.78-metre-tall attacker did not feature in this year’s South America U-17 Championship hosted by Argentina, his experience playing in the Brazilian league is the reason coach Alexandre Gallo has picked him to represent his country at UAE 2013. The stat 4 – In 15 editions of the U-17 World Cup the host side have only won their opening game on four occasions. The first to manage it was Ecuador in 1995, followed by Egypt, two years later and Finland in 2003. The words “Our results indicate that the team is on the right track as far our preparations for the World Cup finals are concerned. We have to maintain this standard and always show a fighting spirit on the pitch. That’s how we’ll win at this tournament,” UAE coach Rashed Albedawi talking about his side’s preparations for the tournament they qualified automatically for as hosts

Jamaica's Athletics Drug-Testing Policies To Be Audited

The World’s Anti-doping Agency (Wada) is launching an audit of the island following reports its policing of track athletes broke down in 2012. Wada's director general David Howman told The Guardian: “It’s an extraordinary visit. [Jamaica is] a high priority, they’re on our radar.” This comes after Renee Anne Shirley, former executive director of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission, revealed the testing of atheletes from January 2012 until the opening of the Games all but fell apart. Wada confirmed the issues surrounding drugs testing in Jamaica. Howman added: “During the beginning part of 2012 where there was no effective operation. "No testing. There might have been one or two, but there was no testing. So we were worried about it, obviously." Jamaican athletes won eight of the 12 individual sprint medals during the London Games and Usain Bolt became the first man to consecutively win both the 100m and 200m sprints. The athletes did not go in totally untested as track and field’s governing body, the IAAF, tested them. Bolt was tested 12 times last year and has never failed a drug test. But five athletes who competed for Jamaica in the London Games tested positive for drugs this year. This included he former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell, the Olympic 4x100m silver medallist Sherone Simpson and the sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown.

NSFW VIDEO! COACH FORCED TO RESIGN AFTER CUSSING OUT

Georgetown head women’s basketball coach Keith Brown resigned Thursday, the school announced, amid allegations that he has consistently verbally abused his players over the past several seasons. Brown’s resignation comes after ABC7 obtained audio of the second-year head coach belittling and cursing out players who crossed him as recently as early last month, sources say, as part of what several current and former players call a pattern of verbal abuse. In audio recordings, Brown can be heard shouting profanities at unidentified players on several occasions. Both of the recordings were taken after a Sept. 6 workout at Georgetown, and in one, he’s heard telling a potentially injured player that she was a “dumb f***.” Both Brown, the team’s second year head coach, and assistant coach Tim Valentine were placed on administrative leave Oct. 1 amid allegations that he verbally abused his players. Sources say that targets of Brown’s abuse have been left “broken and demoralized” over their treatment. Valentine was never accused of verbally abusing players and has returned to the team, the university says.“You’re ****ing with me just to **** with me” After the Sept. 6 workout, sources say that Brown decided to confront his players about their tendency to get along on the court but not off the court, during which he launched into a profanity-laced tirade. “I’m being tested,” he says. “The ones who know, know that you should never test me because I have no tolerance for foolishness. I don’t believe in perpetuating that bull****.” In the recording, Brown goes on to single out one player who wasn’t getting along with her teammates as being defiant. “That was a Georgetown term,” Brown said in reference to the word “defiance.” “Now I’m going to translate it to you for the Keith Brown ****. (You’re) ****ing with me just to **** with me. Is that what it is? If you’re being defiant just to be defiant, you’re ****ing with me. “That’s how I see it. I’m from the hood. An educated ****** from the hood.” Georgetown officials almost immediately rebuked Brown after hearing the audio. “That behavior does not meet expectations and standards for the university and its leaders,” Georgetown spokesperson Stacy Kerr said. “It’s inconsistent with our values and has no place in our community.” Later in the recording, Brown can be heard berating a player who punched a wall in frustration, potentially leaving her unable to practice or play. Brown again referred to himself in third person and talked about his own “vocabulary.” “You’re a grown God-****ed woman and (you’ve) been through this **** up and down a hundred times over,” he says in the recording. “Your solution to the problem is not to get frustrated and hit a ****ing wall and **** your **** up so we ain’t got no (player).” He concluded his rant by telling the player, “You’re a dumb ****.” In a statement released after Brown was placed on leave, Georgetown officials said they had immediately started an investigation into the coach’s behavior when they first learned of the allegations. “We are taking steps to ensure this investigation proceeds expeditiously, thoroughly and fairly,” Georgetown officials said. “It is important to the investigation for students, coaches, and staff to participate openly and honestly, and we have encouraged them to do so.” Brown has his supporters, most notably a group of players who immediately came to their coach’s defense when the allegations became public. Though several players admitted that Brown swears at them when they make mistakes, many attributed his demeanor to his demanding attitude and don’t take it personally. “If you take what he says to heart, then it’s going to hurt your feelings,” freshman forward Shayla Cooper said. “But we’re all D1 players in the Big East Conference, so a coach is not going to babysit us.” Both sophomore guard Katie McCormack and freshman guard Jade Martin defended their coach as well, with Martin saying that if players can’t handle it, then they can’t handle it. “I think he’s a great coach. I don’t want to play with anybody else,” McCormick said. “I think a lot of this is blown out of proportion.” Coaches being hard on players to get the maximum results out of them is nothing new, both current and former players say almost universally. However, as another one of Brown’s former players said, there’s a line between tough love and outright abuse. “It became a thing that we were so used to that it became kind of a norm,” a third former player said. “Why would you put up with someone talking to you that way? You train yourself to get through it.” The verbal abuse of college athletes has become a hot-button issue over the past several months, a trend that is highlighted by the April dismissal of Rutgers head men’s basketball coach Mike Rice. Rice was caught on camera both verbally and physically abusing players at the New Jersey university, scenes that included the use of gay slurs and images of Rice throwing basketballs at his players when they made mistakes. More recently, Louisville Cardinals women’s lacrosse coach Kellie Young was accused of being abusive toward her players. The school has not taken any disciplinary action on her, and according to the Louisville Courier-Journal, school administrators have no planned “next steps” for dealing with the allegations.

DEION SANDERS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ATTACKING COACH

Since founding Prime Prep Academy, Deion Sanders has been no stranger to controversy. In the school’s first six months after opening, its football team was not admitted into UIL competition, there was a notable confrontation with a Dallas reporter and a dismal first season marked by a lack of competitive games. Things have progressed since then — albeit with a bizarre new school mascot — but Sanders suddenly finds himself back in the spotlight for the wrong reasons again. According to the Dallas Morning News, the co-coach of the Prime Prep football team is under police investigation for potential assault after an incident that occurred at a Prime Prep faculty meeting.Prime Prep employee Kevin Jefferson has alleged that he was grabbed by the throat and thrown to the ground by Sanders when he attempted to defend himself against Sanders, who voiced displeasure that student athletes at the school were not performing well in the classroom. Here’s how Jefferson described his encounter with Sanders to the Morning News: “He was a little upset and a little emotional,” Jefferson said, and he and Sanders got into a verbal disagreement. Jefferson told police that he told the suspect not to speak to him that way, according to a police report. “He walked back to the back of the classroom to where I was sitting in a desk,” Jefferson told Tanya Eiserer. “As he got closer to me, I stood up because he was kind of standing over me and he just kind of kept talking to me and at me and then he just grabbed me by my throat and kind of threw me to the ground. Some people had to get him off of me.” Sanders has vigorously defended his actions both on Dallas TV network WFAA and on his personal Twitter account, calling Jefferson a “fake administrator” among other claims.Jefferson said he will investigate his legal options against Sanders following the incident, noting that he was particularly disappointed that the physical encounter occurred on school grounds. At this point the school has yet to release any information about the status of Sanders or Jefferson. Prime Prep Academy co-founder D.L. Wallace was asked about Sanders’ status by the Dallas Morning News but declined to comment citing privacy regarding personnel matters. “I just think it’s unacceptable in a professional environment particularly at a school for that kind of behavior to go on,” Jefferson told the Morning News. What do you think?

Reggae Boyz Conduct Light Training Session In Cool Kansas

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz conducted their first training session in cool Overland Park here Tuesday morning after arriving Monday evening for their decisive CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match against the USA. The match, to be played at Sporting Park, is scheduled to kick off at 5:30 Jamaica time. At the light workout conducted by physical trainer Andre Waugh under the watchful gaze of head coach Winfried Schafer, the players were taken through exercises aimed at achieving recovery after long air travel periods. A more detailed session is planned for Johnson County Community College Tuesday evening as momentum builds in the preparation for Friday’s game. “Our training this morning (Tuesday) was all about recovery as the players had to do a lot of travelling to get here, some of them making many connections,” said Schafer. On the same day that the Boyz face the USA, Honduras host Costa Rica in San Pedro Sula, while Mexico and Panama clash at high altitude Azteca in Mexico City. Along with the USA on 16 points, Costa Rica on 15 points have also booked their Brazil 2014 World Cup spot. Honduras follow in the race with 11 points and are on the verge of clinching the third automatic qualifying spot. Panama and Mexico, eight points each, and Jamaica at the bottom with four are fighting for the fourth-place play-off spot. ''Tuffy' Says He Is Ready For World Cup Qualifiers

Charismatic Waterhouse striker Jermaine 'Tuffy' Anderson says he's looking forward to playing his part in Jamaica's goal rush in Kansas City, USA on Friday afternoon as they attempt to salvage a dying Brazil 2014 World Cup campaign. "If I get a chance I am going to just go out there and do what I do best and get some goals. Only goals can help us now, this game can't be about a draw because that will put us out (of the qualifiers)," he said on board American Airlines flight 2263 bound to Chicago O'Hare International Airport, en route to Kansas City on Monday. Anderson, 34, who gave Jamaica a lifeline in 1-1 draw against Costa Rica at the National Stadium, said a full scale attacking game is the only way to go. "We have to go out there and attack from the first whistle. “This is not the game that we can afford to be defensive in. We have to just go out there and run at them," Anderson said in his typical colourful style. Jamaica sit at the bottom of the six-nation play-offs on four points and must win their game against Brazil-bound USA on Friday, then against Honduras at the National Stadium Tuesday, October 15, and hope that other results go in their favour to snatch the fourth-place spot. The USA (16 points) are joined by Costa Rica (15) as automatic qualifiers to Brazil 2014, while Honduras are in third on 11 points. Panama and Mexico follow on eight points apiece. Full squad — DuWayne Kerr, Daniel Gordon, Lloyd Doyley, Marvin Elliott, Jermaine Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Joel Mcanuff, Darren Mattocks, Theo Robinson, Shaun Cummings, Jermaine Taylor, Westley Morgan, Alvas Powell, Adrian Mariappa, Je-Vaughn Watson, Rodolph Austin, Demar Phillips, Deshorn Brown, Richard McCallum, Gariece McPherson, Jermaine Anderson, Romario Campbell, Kemar Lawrence.
