Global Warming Meeting In Kingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- A joint meeting of the Ozone Action Networks of Latin America and the Caribbean was launched in Kingston today. Several leaders across the region, including officials from Jamaica will over the next four days carry out a series of discussions at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, on new ways to save the Ozone. Gilbert Bankobeza, senior officer of the Ozone Secretariat today said that under the Montreal Protocol countries in the region have made significant efforts to phase out the use of ozone depleting substances but claim that a lot more needs to be done. "Over three years ago we succeeded in phasing out a significant number of ozone depleting substances – namely CFCs, halons, carbon tetrachloride and others,” Bankobeza said. The Ozone Secretariat said the next task is to replace the HCFCs with other ozone-friendly alternatives. Bankobeza revealed that the main challenge in this effort has been the lack of friendly technologies in commercial quantities while HFCs-related ones have a very high global-warming potential and not good for climate mitigation. Meanwhile Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Robert Pickersgill making a presentation at the launch emphasised Jamaica’s commitment to global-warming initiatives. “Jamaica is not only committed to phasing out ozone depleting substances to protect the global climate but also green house gases," Pickersgill said.
