October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- October is being commemorated as Breast Cancer Awareness month. Experts remind that there are many tell-tale signs of breast cancer. Here are some changes to look for: A lump -- this may not be seen, but might be felt. Skin Texture -- Changes in the skin surrounding the breasts, such as dimpling or puking. Appearance -- Change in the appearance of the skin around the breasts, especially in the direction of the nipple. Any discharge from the nipple, and any rash or crusting to the nipple. A woman whose mother, sister or daughter has had breast cancer is two to three times more likely to develop the disease, according to experts. However, the only way to be absolutely certain you are cancer free is to see your doctor for regular check-ups, as one in eight women will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. Also, studies show that men account for about one per cent of breast cancer cases. This equates to about 250,000 cases worldwide each year. The more you know about breast cancer, the better. The sooner you are diagnosed, the more effective the treatment will be.
