A Tempe, Arizona man has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse after he slapped, punched and choked his nephew for having poor grades, police said.
The boy was taken to a trained nurse to locate any evidence of strangulation, a court document stated. The victim told a friend about the alleged incident on Saturday and that’s when police were notified.
The officer said in a probable cause statement that the suspect, Garrett Wright, 48, had a strong odor of alcohol when he came to the door. Wright is the boy’s legal guardian and no one else lives at the home, police said.
A court document stated Wright admitted that he had become upset with the boy’s grades and they then got into a scuffle. Wright said he grabbed his nephew by both upper arms when the boy looked at him funny, according to the officer. Garrett said he spun the boy around and held him against his chest, police said. The officer said he saw red marks on the boy’s neck, right shoulder and left eyebrow. The boy said his uncle had squeezed his neck with both hands to the point he could not breathe.
Wright denied there had been a scuffle, the officer said. Child Protective Services was called to the home to help place the youth in foster care. Wright was booked into jail on one count of aggravated assault and one count of child abuse.
This some ol’ skool mess right here…that boy looked at him crazy so he put him in his place!
