TEENS SHOT AT ICE RINK OVER INFAMOUS “BIGGIE” JACKET
Blood stained the ice rink at New York’s Bryant Park Saturday night, after a feud over a coat erupted in gunfire and two skaters who had been struck by bullets were rushed to the hospital still wearing their skates.Cops arrested 16 year old suspect Corey Dunton, seen below, after an hour-long standoff at his apartment building while the alleged gang banger was posting to his Facebook page from a mobile device.Screams rose from a crowd of 150 park-goers as four or five shots rang out at just after 11 p.m. The gunman had been sitting at a nearby table before he rose and opened fire into the rink, striking not only his apparent target but a 14-year-old boy who happened to skate into the shooter’s path.
The boy, Adonis Mera, of Manhattan, was struck in the back — and doctors told family members early Sunday that the lower half of his body has gone numb. “They said he has no feelings from the waist down,” said Mera’s distraught brother, Jorge Arias, 29.
“He was just there to go skating with friends,” the anguished brother said of Adonis, who had been joyfully posting to his Facebook page about being at the rink moments before being shot.
The argument that kicked off the shooting was over a notorious jacket. Police are questioning a 16-year-old in connection with the shooting. The teen allegedly shot Javier Contreras, 20, in the arm after approaching him about his Marmot Mammoth “Biggie” coat.
The “Biggie” (seen below) has an ugly history. Two years ago, a Bronx teen was killed after he was chased onto Bruckner Boulevard by four men trying to take his “Biggie.” Then this January, a teen in Manhattan’s Lower East Side was killed after getting shot in the chest over an altercation involving the jacket. Vice columnist “Lakutis” recently explained the coat’s allure: “…part of the mystique of the Biggie is that it comes in really bright colors (different ones every year), is sold exclusively through Paragon Sports, and retails for $630.” He adds, “pretty much every [online] review is from a New Yorker telling you that if you’re from New York you shouldn’t cop one or you will be robbed.” Paragon’s website indicates they’re out of stock and/or that they’ve stopped selling them.
Anyway, when Contreras refused to give it up last night, the teen returned with a handgun and fired three shots, the Times says. Besides shooting Contreras, the teen accidentally hit a 14-year-old in the torso. That victim may now face paralysis. The third shot was errant. The New York Post reported the teen being questioned by police posted an incriminating message to his Facebook account Friday:
“Bryant Park Looking To Litt Saterday (sic) Gotta Bring Da amp.”
Then Sunday morning he wrote…
“FEDS AT MY DOOR IM GOIN OUT WITH A BANG!!!!!!! TAKE MY SOUL” he wrote around 8 a.m.
About an hour later, he wrote “LOVE ALL MY REAL N—AS ALL MY REAL SHORTYS FEDS TRIEN KICK DOWN MY DOOR ITS OVER WERE DO I GO FROM HEREEEEE MANNNNN DO I END MY LIFE IDK WAT TO DO I F–KED UP.
The Facebook page has since been taken down.
Shocked skater Brenda Sabater, 15, of Manhattan, called the park “the safest place you could be.” “This is the last place I thought something like this could happen,” she said. “I’ve seen stuff like this happen, but never in a place I felt safe.”
Cynthia del Toro, 17, of The Bronx, said, “I was getting off the ice and I heard something go bang. And I thought it was just construction or a firecracker. But then everyone started running,” she said. “I didn’t know what happened — I just ran.””
SMDH!
